Andrew observed today how kind the people are that we have met. He said (semi-kidding) that he’s never felt this good about himself before. We cannot help but agree; we’ve felt extremely welcomed by our hosts (Prem and Rita), the teachers at Asha Kiran, and friends we’ve been introduced to.
However, we have noticed some interesting differences about India that one could only gather from personally witnessing;
– Nobody walks on the sidewalk, which are just huge slabs of uneven concrete. There are so many people that pedestrians share the road with traffic.
– Indians don’t gesticulate with their hands; they gesticulate with their head. It’s kind of hard to describe. Every time they talk, they wag their head from side to side.
– There are animals everywhere. And I mean everywhere. Mostly cows, dogs, chickens, and goats. They just wander around with everyone else and they’re essentially ignored.
– Traffic is chaos; like nothing you could ever imagine. Not only do you have to be an aggressive driver (honking constantly, cutting people off, running into motorcycles), but you also have to be an aggressive pedestrian to even cross the street.
Basically India has been one long adventure. There has not been one dull moment. From running around the park in the pouring rain to getting separated in downtown Bangalore to hanging out with the kids at school, we’ve basically been moving since we’ve arrived. We’re only expecting more excitement and growth in our lives in our relationship with God and each other.
