That’s Ethan’s favorite phrase. It means “what’s up!” but you should only use it when you already know the person, which might explain why no one in the streets responded to him when he tried to use it this morning. You respond with “map boule!” It’s like when we say we’re chilling, but in Haiti it’s too hot to chill so you say you’re burning!
We could not be much happier here. We eat mangoes every night at dinner. Unlimited mangoes. We wake up to roosters and red sunrises, then climb onto the roof to watch the sunset after a good day’s work of making desserts, helping out around the house, and typing up curriculum for English Camp while we dangle our feet in the pool. Camp starts Monday! Based on our experiences so far, the kids are going to be out-of-this-world adorable and way too much fun. We can hardly wait!
The Tlucek family, lead by the fantastic Byron and Shelley, are remarkably gifted in hospitality. Their house is full of people from all over the place – there are short-term mission teams here too – but they are so loving and inviting that it feels like we’re all just one big family! Today Shelley took us to the beach and it was pretty much how you dream a Caribbean beach would be, plus a scrumptious buffet complete with cane sugar coca-cola.
This place is beautiful and we just encounter one wonderful person after another, but as you all know, there is a ton of poverty. Around Port-au-Prince it’s all you can see for miles. Last night a gal asked Byron if she thought lacking their basic needs made it harder for people here to see God. I want to share his answer because it was something that really struck me. He said he believes that Satan uses our poverty – and our wealth – to distract us from the fact that God is the one who will provide for us. I don’t have a complete thought about that to share with you all, but it is something that’s been hanging out in my mind all day.
God is doing a lot in each of our lives in really unique ways, and we can’t wait to tell you more about that as we trek through seven more weeks of heat, bugspray, and kiddos! We would be so thankful if you would pray for us to have meaningful relationships with the kids and that they would see God in us, and that we would be encouragements to each other.
We can’t thank you enough, friends and fam, for all your support.
MUCH LOVE,
Mollie, Ethan, Meghan, & Heidi
